Sometimes it is hard to digest all that happens in one day, or even in one round of golf.
In honor of John Denver and as a special remembrance of the 10th Anniversary of his passing, last Sunday I got to play the famous course in Pebble Beach called Spyglass Hill where John Denver and some friends–some of whom happen to be friends of mine–played 18 holes on that fateful day 10 years ago.
While Spyglass was every bit as beautiful and challenging as promised (the #7 green is shown above), the friends and fun were actually beyond my expectations. Sure, I could have putted a lot less tentatively; but I made enough good shots to enjoy myself whole-heartedly and I also learned a lot (for example, how to recognize a lay-up opportunity on a course that I’ve never played before). Another lesson appeared as I remember saying out loud on the range, “Maybe today is the day that I actually learn to swing easy.” That didn’t happen, but I think I got a day closer to that goal.
Much more importantly, we had a special celebration befitting a remarkable human being who was not afraid to speak his mind and take a stand for the causes he believed in. John (I met him a couple of times doing video work for The Hunger Project) carried the kind of sparkle in his eye and joy in his step that made a difference with anyone who met him… From grounds keepers to dignitaries… We need more people like John Denver walking and golfing on our planet. His inspiration is missed and it still lives on. Thanks to John and everyone (seen and unseen) who is making this great adventure possible.
